Update and call to action for Waleed Abu al-Khair
Update on Waleed
Waleed is regularly in touch with his family members. He continues to suffer from several health problems including diabetes and benign tumours. He also continues to face challenges accessing medical care, particularly with attending doctor appointments and managing changes to his diabetes medication.
A group of Waleed’s friends are now managing his social media accounts, mainly on X, and are happy to receive solidarity messages from our members to share them from Waleed’s account. It is also a good opportunity for them to share this global solidarity directly with Waleed.
How to join in:
- Send solidarity messages to Waleed in writing or through short videos
- Tagg Waleed’s X account: @WaleedAbulkhair.
His friends will ensure these messages are posted and shared. To maximize impact and longevity, we kindly ask that messages avoid specific time references so they can be reused over time.

1/4 I stand in solidarity with Waleed Abu al-Khair who has been in prison in Saudi Arabia since his arrest on 15 April 2014. Waleed refused to sign a pledge to give up his human rights activism and became one of the first activists to be tried and sentenced under Saudi Arabia’s draconian Counter-Terrorism Law.
2/4 On 6 July 2014, Waleed Abu al-Khair was sentenced to 15 years in prison, to be followed by a 15-year travel ban as a punishment for his lawful and peaceful human rights advocacy.
3/4 Throughout his time in detention, Abu al-Khair has suffered ill-treatment by prison authorities including solitary confinement, sleep deprivation, restricted visits, and denial of food, medications and adequate medical care, which has prompted him to carry out several hunger strikes in protest.
4/4 We call on the Saudi authorities to allow him immediate access to the medical care he requires, and to immediately and unconditionally release him, as well as all other prisoners of conscience unjustly detained for peacefully exercising their fundamental rights.
